I have been working on setting up a Minecraft server for a couple of days now, and I cannot find a way to get my friends outside of my network to connect. I am certain I gave them the correct IP address. I tried many solutions without success. However, I can connect to the server using other computers connected to the router. However, I believe that this only works if the router is set to "cracked".

I tried to disable my firewall on my router and my host computer, as well as using a different computer for the server host and changing the port. All of the solutions I tried gave me the same message: "Cannot Reach Server" to my friends. However, I was able and connected perfectly fine. Here is some useful information.

Host computer (It's not the best...): -OS:Windows XP Professional SP2 -Processor: Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz (uni-core) -RAM: 448 MB -IP Address: 192.168.1.111

 Minecraft Server: -Version: 1.0.0 (jar)

Router: -Type: Wired/Wireless -Brand: Cisco -Model: Linksys E2000 -IP Address: 192.168.1.1 -Router Information: Firmware Version: 1.0.01 build 7Apr 15, 2010 Firmware Verification: 5447e765c2287b134ec7028c3b7c9ceb Current Time: Fri, 06 Jan 2012 18:44:02 Internet MAC Address: 98:FC:11:719:CB -Internet Connection: Connection Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP Internet IP Address: 64.6.115.194 Subnet Mask: 255.255.248.0 Default Gateway: 64.6.112.1 DNS1: 8.8.8.8 DNS2: 8.8.4.4 DNS3: 216.147.229.12 MTU: 1500 DHCP Lease Time: 4 Hour

Please let me know if you require any additional information.

You need to forward some ports (router settings) and then open incoming port in your firewall (OS settings). Start here.

 - - #3

 no luck

I tried that. It didn't work

What error did you get? Is minecraft equipped with a manual for hosting servers? If so, does it specify which port it uses to host the server? Make sure you forward the correct port to the correct LAN IP of the server (assign the server a static ip). Make sure that no firewall is blocking the port at the server.

It says "Cannot reach server" on my friend's computer.

Most ISPs offer dynamic WAN IP. You should always check your WANIP as it could change. Maybe they also need to include the port whem connecting like 64.6.115.194:12345.

 I found the problem(s)

I got it to work...actually...quite a while ago. It was too late to post it.

I gave my friend the address of an external IP, and I used my own internal IP address for computers in my home network. I also set the port forwarding settings on my router and forwarded port 26565 to my internal server IP (ServerIP).

I'm sure a lot of you were saying that before, but I just didn't quite understand it well enough.

Thank you!

Does your external IP change frequently? Wouldn't that mean you need to give him the external every time the friend wanted to play? What happens if the IP address changes during play? What do dynamic IPs mean?

Your ISP may have a variety of IP addresses. Each time a user connects to an internet connection, an IP address is assigned. This expires at a certain date/time. If the user is still connected, the expiry date/time may be extended. The IP that the user has previously used will remain available to another user once he disconnects.

In the dmz (Applications & Gaming> DMZ) of your router, you should enter the host computer’s ip addresses. See if this works first (list the routing table). If it works, then you need to set up Advanced Routing to give the computer a static address. It's similar to a 192.168.1.100 adress. I don't understand your manual and can't help you. Put your friend's computers in the dmzs of their routers also. You may also need to disable the router firewall. Good luck.

There are many posters out there, but if this is your idea, you can look in the routing tables of your router to find the ip addresses I'm referring to. I think you find it in Setup > Advanced Routing in your router's setup. Or, keep it simple. You can do the whole thing without a router.

Go to whatismyipaddress.com this will show you your external IP used this IP to let anyone over the internet to connect to your server. You need to assign static LAN IP to your mincecraft server (OS settings), forward the ports used by your minecraft server (router settings), you need to open the firewall ports used by minecraft server game (OS settings).

user --> internet --> port:1234 WAN IP, ROUTER-->port1234LAN IP, minecraft server any data that goes through port 1234 (internet facing) will be forwarded to port 1234 of your minecraft server.

Please read the previous posts.

Okay, now what?

-Using any device connected via your network, go to your web search provider and type "what IS my IP Address?" Four strings of numbers, varying in length, and separated by dots, will show up. If not, you can try a different search provider. This is your external IP address. This information should be shared with your server members. Next, open Command Prompt and type in "ipconfig". The first sequence of numbers is your IP address. This string is used to connect your game computer to the server as well as other computers connected to your router. Note that this up can change, so you will need to keep checking it and changing editing the saved server name accordingly (also, only for computers directly connected to the router.) Now comes the tricky part. The tricky part is when you go to your internet browser. Enter your external IP in the address bar and hit Enter. You can take a screenshot of this page and post it to this thread. I will guide you from there.

NOTE: It is possible that your friends are not able to connect. If this happens, please post your router's setup page. You can still allow your friends to connect at this point. However, I don't know if it will work for you. It didn't work for me.

Make sure to read the instructions.

I asked that you post a screenshot of your router settings. You can type the external IP address directly into your browser's URL bar and tell me how it looks. If nothing appears, your router might not be compatible with port forwarding. After you have reached the page, press [Print Screen] and go into any image editor. Copy the screenshot into another picture, save it, then post it on this thread. Simple.

If you can't follow my directions from typed words, shoot me your Skype or Yahoo username and I can talk you through the process with Skype or Yahoo! Messenger.

Hey, guys. I've been having sort of the same problem lately. I haven't been able to connect to any Minecraft servers for about a month. I had a list of at least ten servers and they all said, "Can't Connect to Server."

Just a few short days before this happened, my brother made his own server. He port-forwarded and all, and I was able connect to it for the first few weeks. Then, I couldn't connect to it anymore unless I was using his laptop, which is where the server is hosted. This may have something to do with the situation, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. I can still connect to it if I use his laptop, and his laptop only. He cannot also connect to servers other than ours.

I can't imagine a reason we wouldn't connect.

I know he had to make some adjustments to the router to port-forwarding. But, as I said, we were still able to connect to other servers for several days and then everything went dark. I would appreciate your assistance in this matter.

This is not all. We got a new router at the exact time our problems started. I don’t see how this would have helped, but maybe there’s something I can do with this router. Please let me have your thoughts.

 @Seanic

1: Talk to the internet provider to find out if there are problems

2: For the other servers that you tried to connect to, make sure you have the right IP address, and include a port number if required. Note: you do not need the port number if it is 25565, which is the Minecraft default port. Example: IP Address: 12.3.4.56 Port Number: 25566 IP Address with port: 12.3.4.56.25566

3: If your problem persists, post your server IP address in the forums. I will also need to know when it will be on, so figure out a scheduled time range and post that, as well. Don't worry. It will only send me a signal if it is possible. I will not do any other thing unless it is permitted.

Though I am not a professional, I can still be of great help, because I have dealt with setting up a Minecraft server, and most of the problems comming from the laptop that runs it.

I'll try to set up a day that I can turn on the server, but that might not happen for a while.

But I thought I'd inform you that I am able connect to one server in addition to the one that we have. It's the only server that shows up online and I can connect to it.

April 22, 2012

You should also remember that not all public server are available 24/7. Even the servers listed as being online 24/7, they aren't always online. Server maintenance, power outages, and crashes can all affect them. It could be that you are unable to connect to them.

ITS Simple I had the exact same problem #1. Download Simple Port Forwarding #2. You must Allow something on the Start Page, but I don't recall what it was. It had something to do with The Jar or Java Check on you tube #3 Then if your friends still can't connect. Unlock your Internet Router or give them the Internet Router Password so they can join If they still cant join Then you have a Cheap Internet Rounter Antena but thats how mine worked DONT FORGET TO SWITCH YOUR ONLINE MODE=FALSE IN THE SERVER PROPERTIES IF ITS MINECRAFT CRACKED(FREE)

I have one question for everyone. I created a Normal server that my friends can connect to. But I can't connect to it. I made a Bukkit Server, but I can join it. However, my friends can't. Everything is the same as the Normal server. Do I have to port anything else? ?

Magicflags818 asked: I have one question for everyone.  i'm the great wizard I have a Normal Server and my friends can connect to it. I made a Bukkit server but i can't join it. My friends can't. Is there any other way? Click to expand...

Your internal IP address might have changed. Click Start on the server computer and then click My Network Places. Double-click on the internet connection it's using. In the dialog box that pops up, click on the Support tab (if the server is Windows XP) and it should tell you the IP address. Update the port forwarding settings to forward to the new IP, and you should be all set. Note: While I don’t know which tab Windows Vista or 7 shows the IP address, I can assure that the IP address is located in that dialog box.

If your browser cannot access your router's settings pages, you can try entering the external IP into the address bar. Does not have a settings page accessable with a web browser, in which case you will need to use compatible software to access the settings, or 2. It does not have a settings webpage. If it does not support port forwarding, you will need an alternative method to forward the server ports to the server. Or, you can just buy a router with this feature.

Note: I have a Linksys E2000 wireless/wired router, and it does support port-forwarding, so you could base your choice around that (if you do choose to get a new router, of course).
